Define What Deeply Fulfills You

While most of us seek to live a fulfilled life, many of us struggle with exactly how to achieve such an aspiration. The pursuit of fulfillment is as universal as it is individual. All too often however, we end up trying to fit into a mold, or comparing ourselves to those around us. We wonder why what seems to come easily to one person and result in happiness does not produce the same experience for us. The answer to finding deep personal and lasting fulfillment lies within each of us and it is as unique as we are.

Below are three Optimized Living® secrets to help your “best self” shine through and create a more rewarding life.

1. Recognize Your Innate Strengths

It’s often difficult to recognize our own innate gifts because they come so naturally to us that we tend to take them for granted. Rather than attempting to identify your own strengths, solicit input from family and friends as well as past and present co-workers. Their feedback will help paint a more complete picture of who you are, how you powerfully show up in certain situations, and respond to opportunities. Reach out to at least 10 people and ask them to describe 2 to 5 of your strengths and give specific examples. Compile their feedback and look for connections and patterns – you may be amazed at what you discover.

2. Leverage What Comes Naturally

Now that you have a clearer understanding of your innate gifts and have compiled your data, you are in a position to clarify and reframe your self-image. Additionally, this information should help you recognize ways to connect what you naturally have to offer with who you are when you show up at your best. Lastly, recognizing your natural strengths and abilities enables you to make choices that allow your best “future self” to emerge. Utilize this new awareness and the feedback you received from your peers to create a new self-narrative. Start by finding a quiet place to sit down and journal for 10-20 minutes. Use this time to write a description of the “future you” that revolves around your greatest strengths and your desired life.

3. Allow Your Best Self to Emerge

Now that you have a more complete picture of your strengths, and have spent some time reflecting on your desired future self, review your current personal and professional dynamics. Are you positioned, optimally, to allow your true self and strengths to exist and emerge? What steps can you take in the coming days and months to ensure that you’re able to be at your best both personally and professionally? Slight shifts in your awareness and intention can often result in significant benefits to your performance and increased satisfaction driving your overall sense of fulfillment.
