Be Your Own Compass Amidst Chaos

Whether your focus is on personal or professional Peak Performance, times of disruption and confusion can slow your progress or even take you off track completely. For some of us, we began our life’s journey with a clear idea of where our path was headed. Along the way however, unexpected complications and opportunities clouded our vision making our next steps less defined and more challenging.

To avoid these pitfalls think of yourself as a compass. The idea of the compass, as you know, is to provide clear direction and reliability. Regardless of how bumpy or chaotic the journey becomes, it will always point you in the right direction – north is always north. Serving as your own compass requires being just as reliable – and it begins by considering the following three points below:

1. Know Your Values

Take time to consider and identify the concepts, behaviors and standards that you hold in high regard. Keeping your values at the forefront of all your endeavors will help you make the right choices for yourself when faced with other tempting options. Consider writing these principles down in a journal or in a yearly life plan. Your values are often a great place to start when conducting a “gut check” to see how well an opportunity or option fits with what matters most to you.

2. Understand Your Motivators

What inspires you to stretch to new levels? Recognizing what fires you up and keeps you working is key to taking steps, even small ones, toward achieving your purpose, vision and goals. Remember that not all motivators are created equal – some are more beneficial than others. If you recognize that you can be motivated in ways that don’t necessarily serve your highest self, make a point to avoid these options. Instead, set yourself up for success and actively pursue positive inspirations and rewards.

3. Acknowledge Your Desires

Many of us have experience with expectations and responsibilities driving our decisions. While it may not be possible to disregard all of these, incorporating what you truly want in your life is a very powerful way to help ensure that you avoid making a wrong turn regardless of how many surprise twists you encounter. To help you realize your aspirations, be honest with yourself about what you really want to accomplish, experience and leave as your legacy. Check in occasionally to see how your desires align with your values and motivators. The three working in conjunction with each other should prove reliable – guiding you toward your own north star.

Remember to rely on your tribe with similar values and desires as another great way to help navigate life’s path without losing your way regardless of how turbulent times may seem.
