Bring the Benefits of Your Vacation Home

Summer is a popular time of year to let go of normal routines and to get away. Whether you choose to take a few days or a few weeks off, and while vacation is usually all about fun – the benefits can be quite profound. We all know the feeling of when normal daily stresses begin to disappear and the sense of freedom takes over… That’s the “vacation sensation” – it can help remind us of what matters most and allow us to regain a sense of what’s possible in our life! The physical and mental benefits of vacation include lowered stress levels and improved recovery, motivation, and personal relationships. With so much to gain it makes sense to proactively to hold on to the positive effects & takeaways of vacation as long as we can, instead of leaving it at the front door upon our return home.

On your next stay-cation or vacation, consider making the following part of your trip’s itinerary:

1. Journal Your Experiences

Whether you’re dedicated to journaling as part of your experience away or haven’t made it part of your routine yet, consider bringing a notebook or journal on your next trip. A few short sentences jotted down at the end of each day can foster a fond memory and remind you of the feelings associated with it. Simply reading your thoughts and observations at a future time can bring you back to a positive place and help you find that refreshed perspective once again.

2. Collect Mementos

Meaningful items gathered on a trip, whether to a distant country or the park down the street, can provide the pick-me-up required when life feels like it’s not quite going your way. There’s no need to purchase expensive trinkets – small collectables can be fun to display and are a great way to bring the warm feelings of vacation home with you. A personal favorite of mine is to bring back an item I can place in my pocket or on my desk, which I can simply touch to keep my connection to the experience alive.

3. Take & Display Photos

Like mementos gathered on a favorite trip, photos are an excellent way to capture a mood or experience and allow you to relive the positive feelings so often felt on vacation. Take pictures – don’t worry if you’re not a professional, many touching and powerful images have been taken by amateur photographers. Whether you snap a shot of a friend, a loved one, or beautiful scenery – capturing the moment is what’s most important when the time comes to go home and extend the benefits of your vacation.
