Shift Your Glass to Half Full — For Good!

We’ve all been there – had a day where nothing seemed to go our way. It can sometimes be challenging to see any positives or silver linings, but they are usually there, despite our keen ability to overlook them.

Psychology tells us there are countless reasons we gravitate toward a half empty mentality versus a half full one. Recognizing that you have a choice in how your perspective is internalized is an important first step toward choosing a more joyful and positive outlook.

Below are some of my personal favorite practices that can be easily implemented in your daily life to make the shift toward a half-full perspective easier and more permanent. Remember that with practice comes ease!

1. Small Victories Add Up

In our fast-paced world it can be challenging to remember that even the largest mountain is climbed one step at a time. The same holds true in our lives. Whether you set large or small goals for yourself, be reasonable in your expectations for how much you can take on at once. We are all capable of amazing stamina and endurance at times, however this isn’t a sustainable way of life for the longer term. You will find more fulfillment and joy from your accomplishments when you set realistic goals, celebrate your success, and maintain a steady and sustainable pace.

2. Make Time for Thanks

Between busy schedules and demanding lives it can be easy to overlook or under-appreciate daily wins – large and small. From loved ones and good health, to a clear day or light traffic, make a conscious effort to recognize the parts of your day that are worthy of your appreciation. Even small successes can add up to a list longer than you might expect. Practice keeping a gratitude journal so that on more difficult days you can reflect back and remind yourself of all the goodness that’s in your life.

3. Be Purposeful & Aware

By now you’ve heard the buzzword “mindfulness”. Somewhat of an art, mindfulness is a practice and state of being worth the hype. Equal parts detachment and engagement, it allows you to observe a situation from a comfortable, safe distance as you activate your attention fully. By detaching from a situation you release ego and free yourself of distraction. Simultaneously, when you let go of distraction you are able to fully engage all of your senses and focus your energy on the task at hand. From reading with a child to contributing meaningfully to a conversation, mindfulness will ensure that you are deeply present and shifting your perspective to a ‘glass half full’ for the longer term.
