Let Your Dreams Drive Your Actions

Knowing how to cultivate your dreams and translate them into action is the “stuff” that legendary lives are made of.  We all know that it can be challenging in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world to stay focused on goals, dreams, and desires – but learning to do so is critically important. Consider your dreams to be not only your “fuel,” but also your calling card – they are what keep you going when times get tough and they differentiate you from the masses. Hugely successful entrepreneurs and leaders are known for their “vision” – they have an uncanny ability to “see” what others are missing and to create momentum from there.  Below are three key reasons to hold onto your dreams and tips for putting them into action.

1. Define Your Dreams

We all have a big “why” in life as to why we do what we do, whether it be personally or professionally, and our dreams are intricately linked to that.  Our aspirations or long-terms goals often hold the answers to the daunting question of “What is my reason for existing?” or “What is my soul’s purpose?”  Spend some time thinking through dreams or goals that you’ve had for yourself from the time you were a child up until now and notice if there are any common threads running through them.  If so, what are they and what do they say about you, your values, beliefs, etc?  Living a purpose-driven and desire-fueled life is the key to showing up fully and to excelling at a deeper level.  This will allow you to create, accomplish, and problem solve from a place of clarity, personal truth, alignment, and flow. As you become clearer on what is meaningful to you about your dreams – find simple and easy ways to begin incorporating these elements into your life today.

2. Let Your Dreams Create Meaning & Purpose

Oftentimes, we can feel adrift in our lives. Days turn into weeks of busyness and we find ourselves locked into a pattern of making reactive decisions rather than proactive ones.  This is a slippery slope.  No one but you can make the shift to living a more purpose driven life. Tapping into your dreams and desires allows you not only to create a life that is more on your terms, but it also motivates you to stay focused on your end game.  Our dreams remind us of what holds meaning for us.  When we are grounded in meaning and purpose, we are less likely to become discouraged by life’s challenges or to become distracted by the bright shiny objects that may temporarily show up in our awareness.  If your current schedule won’t allow you to fully pursue your aspirations at present, make a point of carving out five minutes a day to nurture your vision. The beauty of dedicating regular time to a dream or goal, is that you’ll be far more likely to spot relevant opportunities and act on them as they appear.

3. Dreams Empower Risk-Taking

When you have a “big dream” for the future – it allows you to hold a longer term view. Challenges in the present moment seem less important as there is a bigger vision or end goal that you are striving for and focused on. A temporary setback suddenly becomes a detour on your path to your end destination rather than a massive insurmountable obstacle.  Instead of being discouraged, you become curious about the current dynamic and start to problem solve from a more open and creative place. By doing so, oftentimes, you will find a solution much more quickly and with less effort. The same is true around taking risks – again, if you are staying focused on your end vision of what’s desired, i.e. your dream – then it is much easier to take the necessary risks to achieve it. With a big goal in view, you are far more likely to step out of your comfort zone with ease and grace, and succeed as a result.  As a Peak Performance coach I see this often with clients – it’s not uncommon that what allows us to grow and progress the most, will at first appear truly terrifying.  Feel the fear and do it anyway – be bold and move closer to achieving your desired goals today.
