There was a time when those seeking Peak Performance put all their energy and effort into one area of their life. Today, we know that taking a more balanced and harmonious approach produces better and more sustainable results. Below are three considerations to keep in mind on your path toward Peak Performance – each of these has been, from time to time, forgotten or skipped by some of my most driven and motivated clients.
1. Set Realistic Objectives
It can be tempting to continuously set highly ambitious goals in multiple sectors of your life. In reality however, determining objectives that are realistic and achievable creates greater success in the longer and shorter term. If you’ve set a lofty goal in either your personal or professional life, outline the smaller steps you can take to move steadily toward your desired outcome. Not everything needs to be a paramount challenge to be worthy of your time and attention.
2. Align Effort With Reward
You likely have a tightly packed schedule which involves juggling work, family, friends and downtime. When was the last time you focused on weighing reward against effort? I invite you to make a list of all the areas of your life that require heavy lifting on your part – is the payoff significant enough to warrant the effort required? If not, examine and identify where the reward is greater and consider putting your focus there instead.
3. Reassess Your Idea of Balance
In today’s fast-paced world, striving for “balance” as an equal distribution of time, energy, and results is not always a realistic expectation – aim, rather, to create a sense of harmony in your life across all sectors. When you feel that you’re making consistent progress toward your goals, as well as feeling rewarded by how you spend your time, a sense of “harmony” can come about quite naturally. Striving for harmony first, not balance, is your key to unlocking Peak Performance results in a busy and fast-paced world.
