Design the Life of Your Dreams

As a coach I spend a lot of time identifying personal and professional goals with my clients and helping to create their dream lives of tomorrow. In order to move powerfully into the future, it’s important that we take stock of the past.  Part of the work I do with my clients is to look at their deeply held beliefs and past behavioral patterns.  If you’ve ever felt like you were taking all the right steps and not yielding the results you desired or expected – the process outlined below will help you. If you’re working to design a life you love, consider that you may need to nurture a new “nature” for yourself before you embark on creating your master plan.

1. Know When to Let Go

Our beliefs and behaviors can be either our most powerful asset or our achilles heel. As you think about and lay out the pieces of your dream life – take the time to identify which of your beliefs or past behaviors you’d be better off without. While letting go can be challenging, the freedom gained by doing so is liberating – you may be surprised at how quickly you experience the positive benefits of this new-found perspective becoming second nature.

2. Give Yourself Space

With so many choices available to us, it can be tempting to try and fill our lives to the brim with amazing experiences and accomplishments. However, attempting to do it all  at the same time can often leave us feeling overwhelmed and unproductive. Whether you choose to outline your dream life on a vision board or in a journal – consider leaving a little open space, literally. You don’t have to fill every inch of the board or every line in the journal in order to feel accomplished and successful. Often times focusing on a single item for a period of time or on an overall shorter list of goals can lead to higher levels of satisfaction and fulfillment.

3. Focus on the Future

Past behavioral patterns and beliefs can feel challenging to change. Keep your attention focused on your present goals and why they matter to you. Remember that taking on anything new can be uncomfortable, and at times scary and overwhelming. Sometimes you may doubt your competence to achieve your goals – this is normal.  Don’t give up! However you’ve articulated and chosen the design of your life, reaffirm why you’re working so hard to make it a reality. Self-doubt can be a very powerful voice, but it’s the one you have the ability to dial down. Try reminding yourself that that was then and this is now – a better and brighter future awaits!
